In short
The first messages women over 35 answer are short, specific to something in their profile, and say plainly what the sender is looking for. On Milf Buddy, an adults-only US dating site, the first message is your one chance to stand out, so make it count: no copy-and-paste lines, no comments on her age or body, and no explicit openers.
| Reading and replying | Needs a paid Milf Buddy membership |
|---|---|
| A good opener | One detail from her profile, one question, one line about you |
| Never send | Photos she hasn't asked for |
| Asked for money? | It's a scam: report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov |
A woman over 35 on a dating site often gets a lot of messages, and most of them are interchangeable. The ones she answers are the ones that could only have been written to her. That's the whole secret, and it takes about two minutes per message.
Reading and replying to messages on Milf Buddy needs a paid membership (prices has the details), so send fewer, better first messages and make each one worth answering.
What a good first message does
A good first message proves you read her profile, gives her something easy to answer, and says in one line what you're after. In practice:
- Shows you read her profile. Pick one specific thing she wrote and respond to it.
- Gives her something easy to answer. A real question, not "how are you?".
- Says, briefly, who you are and what you're after. Not your life story; one line.
It does not need to be funny, clever or long. It needs to be about her, and it needs to be honest.
Before you write: read her profile twice
The detail you need is almost always in her profile already. Read it once for who she is and once for what she wants. Look for:
- What she's looking for. If it doesn't match what you want, don't message her hoping she'll change her mind.
- Her deal-breakers. If she's written "no explicit messages" or "not interested in anyone who can't hold a conversation", take her at her word.
- One hook. A hobby, a place, a strong opinion, a joke. That's your opening.
- Her age range and distance. If you're outside what she's said she wants, respect that.
Example openers
These are invented examples to show the shape of a message that works. Don't copy them word for word; she'll have seen them too if everyone does.
Example: "You said you'd rather be on a boat than at a bar. Sailing or fishing? I've only ever done the second and I'm not good at it. I'm 40, in Denver, and looking for something easygoing and regular."
Example: "Anyone who lists 'arguing about films' as a hobby is someone I want to argue with. What's the last one you walked out of? I'm after dates and good conversation, and happy to see where it goes."
Example: "Your line about having no time for small talk made me laugh, so I'll skip it: I'm looking for something casual with someone who knows her own mind, and you sound like you do. Free for a drink sometime in the next couple of weeks?"
Notice what they share: one detail from her profile, one question or clear suggestion, one honest line about intent.
Instead of this, try this
Most weak openers can be fixed by swapping a general line for a specific one. The right-hand column shows the kind of change, not lines to copy.
| Instead of | Try (example) | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| "Hey gorgeous" | "Your photo at the trailhead: which trail was it?" | Asks about her, not how she looks |
| "You look great for your age" | "You said you've just taken up pottery. What made you start?" | Responds to her choices, not her age |
| "Want to have some fun?" | "I'm looking for something casual and regular. Is that something you'd be open to?" | Clear intent, no detail, leaves the choice with her |
| "Tell me about yourself" | "What's the best thing you've done this month?" | Easy to answer in one line |
| A long paragraph about you | One line about you, then a question for her | Keeps the focus on the conversation |
What gets ignored, or blocked
- "Hey" or "Hi beautiful". It asks her to do all the work.
- Anything about her age. "You look great for your age" is a backhanded compliment. So is any version of it.
- The word MILF. It's the name of the site, not a compliment. Our guide to what MILF means explains why so many women dislike it.
- Comments on her body. Even flattering ones, in a first message, read as if you haven't noticed there's a person attached.
- Explicit openers. Being clear that you want something casual is fine. Describing it is not.
- Copy-and-paste. If your message would work just as well sent to anyone, she'll assume it was.
- A rush to move off the site. Asking for her number, social media or a messaging app before she offers is a red flag, and one scammers use too.
Saying what you want without being crude
You can say you want something casual; the line between honest and crude is detail. Milf Buddy is an adult site, and many members are looking for something casual. "I'm looking for something casual and regular" is honest; anything more graphic, in a first message, is crude.
Let her decide whether to take it further, and at what speed. The age-gap dating guide covers what comes after the first exchange.
When she replies
Match her pace and length. If she writes two lines, don't send twelve. Ask about what she's said rather than steering back to yourself, and answer her questions properly.
Suggesting a date
After a few good exchanges, it's reasonable to suggest meeting somewhere public, then let her choose the time and place, or say she'd rather wait.
Example: "I'm enjoying this. Would you like to get a drink one evening next week? Somewhere central, your pick, and no problem if you'd rather keep chatting for now."
If she'd rather wait, wait. If she suggests a video call first, say yes; it's a sensible step, and our first-date safety checklist recommends it.
When she doesn't
Silence is an answer. People don't reply for all sorts of reasons, from "not interested" to "busy week". One polite follow-up after a few days, if you have something new to say, is fine. After that, move on, without comment.
Never message her from a second account, never send a message complaining that she hasn't replied, and never send anything you wouldn't want screenshotted.
If you're the one receiving messages
Whoever you are, be cautious when someone's story keeps changing or money comes up. The Federal Trade Commission's romance scam advice lists the usual pattern: someone who can't meet in person, wants to move the conversation off the dating site soon after matching, and eventually asks for help paying for something, often by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency.
Other warning signs: photos that look like a professional shoot, a refusal to video call, and pressure to move to another app. If someone you met online asks for money, stop replying and report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, then report the profile through the members help center. Our safety page lists who else to contact. Women over 35 will find more on filtering messages in dating over 35 on your own terms.
Before you meet
Once the messages turn into a plan, read the first-date safety checklist. It takes two minutes and covers the things people forget.

Questions people ask
How long should a first message be?
Two to four sentences is plenty. That's long enough to show you read her profile and to say what you're after, and short enough for her to read and answer on a phone between other things. If your opener needs scrolling, cut it down to the one detail that matters most.
Is it OK to say I'm looking for something casual?
Yes. On an adult site it's better to be clear than to hide what you want and hope. Say it plainly and politely, in one line, without explicit detail, and then let her decide whether that suits her. If it doesn't, she'll say so or not reply, and that's her answer.
She read my message and didn't reply. Should I try again?
One gentle follow-up after a few days is fine if you have something new to say, such as a different question about her profile. Don't point out that she hasn't answered. If the follow-up gets no reply either, let it go. Silence is a complete answer.
Can I send photos in my first message?
No. Don't send any photo she hasn't asked for, and never send an explicit one unless she has clearly said she wants it. Unrequested explicit images are one of the quickest ways to get blocked and reported, and they tell her you haven't been reading anything she wrote.
Should I mention that she's older than me?
Not in a first message. She knows the age gap is there, and pointing it out reads as either surprise or a fetish. Respond to what she wrote about herself instead. If the age difference matters to either of you, it will come up naturally later, and our age-gap guide covers that conversation.
